On Saturday, October 26th, 2019, Irish architect Yvonne Farrell spoke at the Monterey Design Conference. On March 3rd, 2020, she and her partner at Grafton Architects, Shelley McNamara, were awarded the Pritzker Prize for their extraordinarily powerful work, like the School of Economics at Università Luigi Bocconi in Milan and the Lima campus of Peru’s Universidad de Ingeniería & Tecnología (UTEC). Farrell’s talk at MDC was inspiring.

In “Stop asking where all the female architects are; we’re right here” (The Architect’s Newspaper), Julia Gamolina, founder and editor of Madame Architect, argues for focusing attention on “the myriad women who are doing exceptional, sensitive, and important work while simultaneously running businesses, acting as caregivers, and making time to mentor.” Doing so, she continues, “is the beginning of change. Instead of asking ‘Where are these women?’ start writing about them and telling their unique stories. Show their successes, their reinventions of practices, and how they forged their own paths.” Read the full article here.

The Architect’s Newspaper “serves up news and inside reports to a niche community of architects, designers, engineers, landscape architects, lighting designers, interior designers, academics, developers, contractors, and other parties interested in the built urban environment.”
