San Jose’s Hotel Montgomery is among the largest buildings in the world to have been moved on wheels. While some sources place it in the top ten, Engineering News Record’s top ten excludes it. In ENR’s list, the 10th largest building ever moved is Building 51 at Newark International Airport, weighing 5,000 tons. At 4,816 tons, the Hotel Montgomery is not far behind.
The video “Saving the Montgomery,” sponsored by the San Jose Redevelopment Agency, tells the story of the hotel’s preservation and includes impressive footage of the move itself. Watch it here. (If you’re impatient, the drama begins at about 14:35.)
